Hi, I'm Tessa Smith McGovern. I've taught writing for 22 years (since 2011 at The Writing Institute, Sarah Lawrence College). I'm also an award-winning, Amazon best-selling writer selected as a 'Featured' author by Kirkus Reviews.
Some people think writing is a mysterious process, that it can’t be boiled down to a simple approach.
But the truth is, there IS a simple approach - blocks you can avoid - to start writing.
And these mindset shifts work for ALL types of writing from literary fiction to genre fiction.
Writing becomes easy once you know what to avoid.
Writing becomes fun again, and so deeply rewarding!
That’s why so many people - published and unpublished - continue to write their whole lives.
My new, free PDF download, compiled from my years of experience as a writer and an instructor, can teach you the top 5 mistakes to avoid and unlock all the stories inside you.
And the best part? You can post these mindset hacks somewhere prominent and avoid slipping back into the old, bad habits of thinking.
You can come to the free, weekly sprints to get writing, get organized, and become the writer you long to be.

Write more words, improve your craft, and submit your work during my two, free* weekly Zoom writing workshops with Q&A’s, submission parties and micro lessons.
Zoom Workshop times: Tuesdays 12 – 1.30 PM ET and Wednesdays 7 – 8.30 PM ET.
* Hosted by the Westport Library, open to all writers from any town or country.
Here’s how the workshop goes: We chat for the first few minutes and then I’ll share some prompts and first lines which people can use, tweak or ignore. The writing time can be spent on new words or world-building, revising – anything at all – doesn’t even have to be creative writing. We write for 30-40 minutes.
Then during the first and third weeks, in the last fifteen minutes of the workshop, I’ll help you submit your writing for publication. Bring the stories or essays you want to submit and we’ll walk through the process together. You’ll leave the session with a list of 15 – 20 markets for your work. Writers (inc. first-timers!) have had multiple pieces accepted for publication using this system.
On the second and fourth Tuesdays, we’ll have a micro lesson on the art and craft of writing. In the last 5 mins, we discuss goals and obstacles (and tips to overcome them) for the coming week.
In each workshop, we apply the principles of loving kindness meditation to our creative process. Loving kindness meditation has many proven benefits including better focus, improved memory and increased productivity.
When? Every Tuesday from 12 pm – 1.30 pm ET and every Wednesday from 7 – 8.30 pm ET
