7-MODULE VIDEO COURSE WITH FEEDBACK

HOW TO REVISE YOUR FICTION OR MEMOIR

An essential 7-module class for anyone writing memoir or fiction.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

It's for you if you've written (or started) a story and aren't sure how to go about revising it.

Or if you've tried revising and aren't sure if you made things better or worse. (We've all done it!)

It's for you if the thought of self-editing makes you feel overwhelmed or tentative.

Hi, I'm Tessa Smith McGovern. I’ve been a writing teacher for 23 years and I’ve taught at Sarah Lawrence College's Writing Institute since 2011. I've been a writer for even longer and was first published in 1996.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE COVER?

This step-by-step course covers the foundational skills - the craft - that every writer needs to revise their fiction.

You'll learn how to make your story the best you can on your own before getting feedback from the fresh eyes of qualified readers or professional editors.

This saves you money and time and aids in the process of developing your writing craft as well as your sensibilities as an artist.

It also gives you the vocabulary you'll need to work with professional content (also called developmental) editors.

Please Note: Learning these foundational skills is fun! It's wonderfully empowering to know you've got these skills in your toolbox. You'll feel a new confidence in your writing and your ability to do justice to the ideas and stories in your head.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The fundamentals of fiction writing - what every writer needs to write powerful stories, whether fiction or memoir that reads like fiction.

The Arc of a Successful Story
Compelling Characters
Characterization and Exposition
Show, Don't Tell
Point of View

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are seven video lectures. You can go through them at your own pace.

Each lecture has a printable transcript and a 300 - 500 word assignment on that module's topic.

You can either write new words for your assignment or send 300 - 500 words of an existing story for feedback.

You will email your assignment to:

You will receive feedback on your assignment, usually within a few days.

This is a seven-module course with instructor feedback. The cost is $385.

WHEN DOES IT BEGIN?

This is a self-paced course so it begins anytime after you register.

You will receive an email inviting you to log in and watch the first video.

Remember, revising your fiction becomes easy once you know the system.

Revising becomes fun, and so deeply rewarding!

By the end, you will have exploded your fiction writing knowledge and skills.

As you continue to write and learn, you'll continue to develop into the writer you long to be. Once your learning expands, it can never go back. You will continue to evolve into a more sophisticated craftsperson and artist.
